Jets’ top rookies in danger of missing Cardinals matchup

Jets rookie wide receiver Denzel Mims is eligible to return from injured reserve, but it does not sound as if he is close to playing.

Mims, who has dealt with hamstring injuries since the beginning of training camp, was not cleared to practice Wednesday and remains on IR. The Jets cleared other players who were on IR to begin practicing, but not Mims.

“He’s done a lot of a lot of things he needs to do, every once in a while he might feel something,” Gase said. “So that’s when our guys got to kind of evaluate and see what we’ve got to do and see what we’ve got to manipulate and figure out how to get that fixed.”

Mims, the team’s second-round pick from Baylor, injured one hamstring just before training camp started and missed all of camp. He returned to practice before the season opener against the Bills, but injured his other hamstring and has not practiced since. The Jets placed him on IR after Week 1, meaning he would be out for at least three games. That period is over, but he’s not ready to come back yet.

“I don’t want to put a timetable on it, I just know we’ve got to make sure when he does come back, we’ve got to have him for the duration,” Gase said. “If he’s not ready, then we shouldn’t have him out there. When he’s ready, that’s when we need him out there, because we need him to be out there and stay out there.”

Mims is not the only ailing rookie. LT Mekhi Becton, the team’s first-round pick, did not practice Wednesday and could miss Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

“It’s all strength predicated,” Gase said. “When he gets to the point where he feels like he’s got the strength that he’s looking for, the way he plays, that’s when I think he’ll feel good, we’ll feel good. I just know that he doesn’t have that at the moment. He’s working to get it back, and we’ll just kind of see. We’re just taking it day to day and just kind of see where he’s at.”

The Jets cleared RB Le’Veon Bell, WR Vyncint Smith, LB Blake Cashman and DL Jabari Zuniga to practice Wednesday. All of them have been on IR. The Jets now have a 21-day window to move them onto the active roster. It seems likely Bell will play Sunday. … WR Breshad Perriman (ankle) did not practice. Gase said he is still struggling with change of direction. … CB Bless Austin (calf), OLB Jordan Jenkins (shoulder, calf) and QB Sam Darnold (shoulder) also did not practice. S Ashtyn Davis (groin) and WR Chris Hogan (ribs, knee) were limited.
